From Learning to Making: A Hands-On Dim Sum Workshop Tour in Ipoh

As part of the Industry Insight Tour Ipoh-Fukuoka Youth Exchange Program, we had the opportunity to welcome a group of young participants from Fukuoka, Japan for a hands-on dim sum experience in Ipoh.

Rather than simply learning about dim sum, the participants had the chance to make it themselves getting their hands on the ingredients, learning basic techniques and experiencing the care and skill that goes into preparing each piece.

Getting Hands-On with Dim Sum

The workshop gave the participants an opportunity to experience dim sum making from a different perspective as part of their tour in Ipoh.

With guidance from our team, they were introduced to the steps involved in preparing and shaping dim sum. From handling the ingredients to learning how to shape each piece, everyone had the opportunity to try their hand at making dim sum themselves.

It was a learning experience that required a little patience, some concentration and plenty of curiosity.

Learning the Craft Behind Every Piece

Dim sum may look simple when it arrives on the table, but making it by hand takes technique and attention to detail.

During the workshop, the participants experienced some of this process firsthand. As part of their tour, they learned how different techniques are used to shape dim sum and discovered that each piece takes a combination of skill, practice and care.

For many of the participants, getting to make dim sum themselves was a completely different experience from simply enjoying it as a meal.

The workshop was also a chance for cultural exchange.

As the participants worked together, learned new techniques and shared plenty of smiles along the way, food became a simple way to connect people from Malaysia and Japan.

The experience gave them a chance to explore Malaysian food culture in a more personal and interactive way, not just by tasting dim sum, but by understanding the hands-on work behind it.

A Taste of Ipoh to Take Home

By the end of the workshop, the participants had more than just a new appreciation for dim sum. They had experienced the process of making it themselves and created memories together along the way.

From learning the craft to trying something new with friends, it was a small but meaningful part of their time in Ipoh.

Sometimes, the best way to understand food is to make it yourself.
